01 — Iconic architecture
Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque
Set on a hill above the Johor Strait, Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque is one of the clearest visual symbols of Johor Bahru. The mosque was completed in 1900 and is known for a distinctive mix of Victorian and Moorish influences: white walls, arched colonnades, blue roofs and minarets that resemble clock towers.
The grounds and surrounding viewpoints make this a rewarding architecture stop even on a short city visit. It is also an active mosque, so the experience should be quiet and respectful rather than treated as an ordinary photo attraction.
Best for: architecture, history, city views and a calm start to a heritage itinerary.
Plan it: dress modestly, avoid disrupting prayer, and ask before entering restricted areas or taking interior photographs.
